"One reason why I am a convinced suffragist is that the mothers (even as wage earners) take the greater share of the responsibility in the upbringing of their children; therefore, they ought to have the greater means, not the less, to enable them to do justice to the rising generation.”
Selina Cooper, August 1913
Martina Mullaney became the the first water-based artist in residence on board Selina Cooper together with her daughter and their dog Max.
Originally a photographer, over the past seven years Martina has developed a strand of her practice called Enemies of Good Art, highlighting the missing Mother in critical, public, social and academic contexts. Her work is often text based and discursive. "I am interested in maternal, domestic and social labour and how the role of the mother continues to be denigrated."
The Mother Booth
With help from women and the Librarians at Rosegrove Library Martina has developed and installed The Mother Booth.
The Mother Booth, is a place where all women are invited to enter and record a story about Mothering. A story about you as a mother, you mothering, or you being mothered.
The Mother Booth will be in Rosegrove Library until the end of August and collected stories will be donated to Lancashire Audio Archive.
May 2016 Lancashire Council notified the public that among the many cuts to public services in the region forced on the local authority by the current Conservative governments continued policy of austerity, forty libraries and five museums will close. The total list of proposed cuts is long and depressing, the devastation extends to children’s and young people’s centres, axing subsidised bus services with an increase in prices on existing routes, cuts in services within the arts, heritage and countryside.
Rose grove Library is one of the many libraries proposed to close to join the campaign to save it complete the online consultation form.
